The Jan 13th episode of the PBS television series, Genealogy Roadshow, took place in New Orleans and one segment featured Domenic and Katie (Spizale) Giardina, both of whose families originated from Ustica. The couple was interested in knowing if their families were acquainted prior to emigrating to the US in the late 1800s. The Roadshow did a great job of representing Ustica, showing beautiful photos and always correctly pronouncing place and family names. It's a must see and thrilling to know that Ustica and our community got some nationwide coverage. You can check the PBS website at www.pbs.org/genealogy-roadshow/home/ to look for times when the episode will air again or at video.pbs.org/program/genealogy-roadshow to sign up to view the entire episode online. it was particularly exciting that my great great grandfather, Michelangelo Caravella, was mentioned as witness to some Ustican birth records of the Giardina/Spizale families. Michelangelo Caravella was a barber and his place of business was next door to city hall. He was a quick and ready witness for hundreds of birth, marriage and death records in the late 1800's. This enforces one of the themes of the segment - in such a small community, it's nearly impossible for everyone not to know each other in some capacity. Kudos to Genealogy Roadshow for a job well done and special thanks to the Giardina family for bringing some positive national attention to our heritage.
