Looks like they might have come to New Orleans out of convenience. There was a regular ship route from Palermo to New Orleans in the 1800's and I think once a few got established everyone else followed. Another theory is that a military group composed mostly of Usticesi served under Roberdeau Wheat, a mercenary from Virginia who lived in New Orleans, during the unification of Italy about the same time as the US Civil war. Many may have followed him back to New Orleans as is evidenced by the large number of Ustciesi in the NO Itaian Guards.
