Ancient origins of the Basile family of Ustica
By Chris Caravella

The Basile Family of Ustica rank 6th in size making them one of the largest families from Ustica. As would be expected of a large family, they have a complicated presence in the early population of Ustica. They are a first family of Ustica initially appearing in a 1763 baptism record for a child of Vincenzo Basile and Maria Cesareo. There are also records for some of his siblings living in Ustica, most notably Angela Basile, wife of Onofrio Russo, who start having children on Ustica in 1766. This branch of the Basile family, however, are not major contributors to the Basile descendants of Ustica amounting to only about 2% of the total. There are another two branches of the family that are the true "Abrahams" of the Basile family from Ustica.

Domenico Basile first appears in the Ustica church records as a godparent in a 1766 baptism record. This is probably the same Domenico Basile, husband of Bartolomea Cesario, that begin having children on Ustica in 1768. They were married on Lipari in 1754 and came to Ustica with their children born on Lipari. He dies on Ustica in 1782 and she in 1787. Their descendants make up 18% of the total and include many who immigrated to Tunisia in North Africa, and to the New Orleans area.

Francesco Basile, who marries Anna Martello in 1756 on Lipari, came to Ustica between 1768 and 1771. They have a daughter born on Ustica in 1771, but most of their children were born on Lipari. All were married on Ustica. He dies on Ustica in 1813, she in 1817. Their descendants account for a whopping 50% of the total and are the largest contributors to the Basile descendants who immigrated to New Orleans and surrounding areas.

Finally, there is another couple, Cono Basile and Francesca Albora, who came late to Ustica about 1798. They, however, are only minor contributors (less than 1%) to the Basile descendants.

The Basile family on Lipari only extend back a few more generations. All branches of the Basile family found on Ustica tie back to one common ancestral couple, that of Cono Basile and Francesca Ristuccia. There is evidence of other Basile families on Lipari contemporaneous with Cono Basile and Francesca Ristuccia but there is no evidence that they are related. The earliest baptism records for their children in the early 1650s document Cono Basile as being a native of Piraino, a city on the Northeastern coast of Sicily just south of Lipari. The Ristuccia family is an ancient family from Lipari with a presence in the earliest Lipari church registers in the late 1500s. This would also suggest that they were married on Lipari even though a marriage record for the couple has not been found.

Piraino is a smaller municipality (not shown on this map) lying about midway between Gioiosea Marea and Naso in the area along the Northern coast of Sicily that was the source of so many immigrants to Lipari in the 1600s.

The surname Basile has an interesting history of variation in spelling. Initially in the very earliest of the Lipari church registers, the familiar form Basile is used. But throughout most of its presence in Lipari and stretching into the early years on Ustica, the spelling Vasili is used. By 1815 on Ustica, Vasili is once again completely supplanted by the use of Basile. This back and forth would suggest that this may be a true phonetic variation, depending on the preference of the time.
