Ancient origins of the Famularo family of Ustica
By Chris Caravella

The Famularo family of Ustica rank 19th in size which is on the high end of the smaller families from Ustica. This ranking though is overly high due to the specific dynamics of this family. The Famularo family is a large and ancient family in Lipari, so a lot of their footprint at the Ustica Genealogy Homepage is from Lipari rather than Ustica. They are a first family of Ustica first appearing in the Ustica church records with the 1763 baptism of a child of Santa Famularo and Felice Zanca. Also during the first five years of Ustica church records are baptisms for children born to Francesca Famularo and Giuseppe Cappadona, and Caterina Famularo and Antonino Pittari. The ladies were leading they way to Ustica, with the exception of Giovanni Famularo and Maria Giacino who were married on Ustica in 1765.

The true progenitors of the family in Ustica, however, are Gaetano Famularo and Giovanna Paino who account for 46% of the Famularo family and are the only branch whose descendants not only prospered in Ustica but also left for Lampedusa and New Orleans. They came to Ustica a bit later than the first wave showing up in the church records with the 1771 baptism of a child. Giovanna dies on Ustica in 1806 followed by the death of Gaetano in 1809.

Back on Lipari the Famularo family incredibly traces back six more generations to the very earliest of the Lipari church records. The first mention of the Famularo family is a 1560 baptism record for a child of Giovanni Famularo and Giuseppa Piscopo.

The 1560 baptism record for Minichella (variant of Domenica) Famularo. The Lipari church registers begin in 1559 making this one of the oldest.

All Famularo families, including all the early branches found in Ustica, trace back neatly to this one couple. At its deepest, the Famularo family tree traces back 13 generations spanning almost 500 years of family history.
