This next record is from 1852, another passenger list from a boat originating in Palermo and arriving in New Orleans. Dominick Verdikiez is the first person listed and most importantly the "Country to which they belong" is listed as the US. And we knew this because we saw his marriage in 1848 and his entry in the census just two years earlier. And not only is he travelling back and forth from Ustica, he's also bringing other Usticans back with him. The next 5 men bear surnames from Ustica. This is a standard pattern for immigration no matter which nationality is involved. The first immigrants are men and they remain together as a community keeping ties with the homeland and setting up a pipeline for other immigrants to make the voyage over. There are no Italian women coming over this early so they frequently marry into other non-Italian immigrant populations in city.
