Guiseppe Desimone was my 2x-great-grandfather, and I have found quite a bit about him and his family. He is in the 1850 US Census in New Orleans with two of his brothers, listed as Josp Disamon:

1850 US Census, (New Orleans) Third Representation District, Parish of Orleans, Louisiana [Roll M432_234, Pg 198 (image 194)]
_ Joph Disamon, Age 22, Male; Occupation: Market; Birthplace Italy
_ Charles Disamon, Age 20, Male; Occupation: Market; Birthplace Italy
_ Edmd Disamon, Age 18, Male; Occupation: Market; Birthplace Italy

The earliest record I have of him in California is the birth of their oldest child, Salvadore, in Columbia in 1862. A letter from Anna Matilda Desimone to her niece Early Goodcell Lyon (my grandmother) says they left "the mines" for San Francisco in 1863, but since Josephine was born in San Francisco in 1862, Aunt Matilda's memory was slightly off. She would have been recounting stories of events which happened before her birth.

Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like to compare notes.
